Cancer Genomics (CGx) Overview

CGx testing determines a patient’s risk for hereditary cancers.

Lehigh Valley Genomics runs a panel of 45 genes suspected to play a role in predisposing patients to cancer, including genes associated with common and rare cancers.

A person with an inherited gene mutation will not necessarily develop cancer, but he or she will be at a higher risk.

Types of hereditary cancer tested:

  Breast | Ovarian | Endometrial | Colorectal | Gastric | Prostate | Pancreatic | Melanoma

Genes in a test tube

Patients with the following traits are best candidates:

  • Personal history of cancer
  • Personal history of multiple cancers

Test Basics:

  • This is a once-in-a-lifetime test
  • A buccal (cheek) swab is used in this test
  • Accurate results are in the secure portal within 3 weeks
  • All results are reviewed by molecular pathologists
  • Every patient receives genetic counseling services

Possible Results:

  • Negative: no mutations found in the screened genes
  • Positive: a mutation was found in one or more of the genes tested that is known to cause an increased chance of developing one or more types of cancer
  • Variant of Uncertain Significance (VUS): a change in a gene that requires further research to determine whether it causes an increased risk for cancer or not.
